Laser Teeth Whitening
@ Regent Street Clinic
The surface of the teeth contains millions of microscopic pores and over time organic compounds from food, fizzy drinks, tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco settle into these pores and cause discoloration of the tooth enamel.
Tooth discolouration: the two types of stains
There are two types of staining as it relates to your teeth: Extrinsic staining and intrinsic staining
Extrinsic Stains are those that appear on the surface of the teeth as a result of exposure to dark coloured beverage such as tea and coffee, foods, tobacco and routine wear and tear. Superficial extrinsic stains are minor and can be removed with brushing and dental cleaning. Stubborn extrinsic stains can be removed with more involved efforts such as teeth whitening. If left without attention extrinsic stains can penetrate into the dentin and become ingrained in the tooth structure.
Intrinsic stains are those that form on the interior of the teeth. Intrinsic stains result from trauma, aging, exposure to antibiotics such as tetracycline and/or excessive ingestion of fluoride. In the past it was thought that intrinsic stains were too resistant to be corrected by whitening. Today cosmetic dentistry experts believe that even deep-set intrinsic stains can be improved with laser teeth whitening.
The clever bit
The laser light activates the whitening gel which breaks down into oxygen and water molecules. These molecules then penetrate the tiny pores of the enamel and the stains are lifted away from the tooth. As the stains are broken into smaller and smaller pieces, more light passes through the teeth and makes them look lighter.
1. A plastic retractor is gently placed in your mouth to hold your smile in position
2. A protective dam is applied to your gums
3.The whitening gel is applied to your teeth and the laser is activated
4.The whitening gel is removed and reapplied
5. Finally when the dam and plastic retractor is removed you can rinse out your mouth and you will be shown your new smile

Although whitening teeth has become popular recently, the idea is not new. Over time, many technical improvements have been made and the process has been thoroughly studied and safety-tested. Scientific articles have shown that the materials used to whiten your teeth are effective and safe. It does not change the structure of teeth; it merely makes them appear whiter and brighter.
The whitening procedure is not painful. Although some patients experience increased tooth sensitivity, this usually disappears in a day or so. Even people who are fearful of dental procedures generally find the procedure easy to tolerate. NO HEAT, NO NEEDLES OR DRILLS are used and you can swallow normally during the procedure.
Q: Does Teeth Whitening really work?
A: Of course it does! The surface of the teeth contains millions of microscopic pores, and over the years, organic compounds from food, fizzy drinks, tea, coffee or tobacco penetrate these pores causing discoloration of the tooth enamel.
Q: How does laser whitening compare to other whitening options?
A: Clinical studies have shown that laser bleaching whitens an average of 8+ shades in 1 hour. Compare this to a leading tray system, which achieved only 6 shades and took weeks. In fact, many tray users never achieve even a few shades, as it is difficult to complete the regimen - night after night sleeping with trays full of bleaching gel, often accompanied by sensitivity and gum irritation. As you can see, My Smile Spa is a tremendous value by comparison. Incidentally, the same study showed that a leading whitening toothpaste was only able to achieve 1.5 shades of improvement after an entire month of use.
Q: Does Laser teeth whitening work on veneers, crowns, bridges and fillings?
A: The laser teeth whitening procedure will not whiten crowns, veneers, bridges or fillings however they will be restored to their original colour.
Q: Does Laser Teeth Whitening damage the enamel of the teeth?
A: Research shows there is no risk to the enamel of the teeth after having a laser teeth whitening treatment.
Q: How does it work?
A: The teeth whitening expect will first examine your teeth and gums for good oral health. Next, as you relax in the chair, our patented whitening gel is applied to your teeth and the blue light will be positioned over your teeth to activate the gel. As you watch TV, listen to music, your teeth will lighten and your natural whiteness will be restored in just 1 hour through a completely safe process of oxidation.
Through our unique chemistry and revolutionary blue wavelength light, a process that used to take many hours can now be accomplished in just 1 hour.
Q: Is it safe and will it hurt?
A: The procedure is completely safe. Laser whitening will not damage enamel or existing fillings. The majority of our clients experience no pain or sensitivity after the treatment. A very small percentage of customers may experience a minor dull "ache" following the procedure. Taking some sort of analgesic almost always resolves the feeling. It is best to avoid very hot or very cold drinks for the first 24 hours if there is any tooth sensitivity.
Q: How white will my teeth get?
A: In clinical studies, laser whitening has been able to achieve over 8+ shades whiter on average. Your results of course will vary as your starting point may be different and everyone's teeth respond a little differently, but in virtually all cases, the results are dramatic. Ultimately, the goal will be to achieve your optimum, natural whiteness.
Expectations should remain realistic, however our patients commonly achieve between 5-12 shades of lightening after a 1-hour treatment.
Q: How long does it last?
A: The long-term results depend primarily on the individual. Certain habits, such as the use of tobacco products, drinking a lot of coffee, tea, dark soft drinks, and infrequent visits to the dentist for regular cleanings, can work against the results. Regular professional care and use of the home kit can help maintain your whiteness for 1-2 years. Some people prefer to do the whitening treatment more frequently. Celebrities often have a whitening top-up every 3 months!
Q: Is this procedure for everyone?
A: Virtually any adult wanting to whiten his or her teeth can benefit from laser teeth whitening - including people with severe food, coffee, tobacco or tetracycline stains. We do not treat subjects under the age of 18 yrs. We recommend that you not do this process while nursing or pregnant, receiving orthodontic treatment, or have extensive dental work, such as veneers or crown/bridges. These factors will be reviewed at your initial consultation.
